Summer Institute

Welcome to the Summer Institute!

The Summer Institute is a 9-week engagement for instructors interested in creating or redesigning an online or hybrid course. The Institute will emphasize innovative teaching and learning as well as high-quality course design.

Who Should Apply

We are looking for instructors who are teaching online or hybrid as a result of the university's pivot to remote instruction and who see potential in adopting those modalities going forward. 

Full-time tenured or tenure track faculty and full-time lecturers are preferred, however other teaching faculty are still encouraged to apply.

Attendees will use their time in the Summer Institute to focus on course improvements highlighting this year's theme: Texas State Tough: Creating Resilient Courses. To support attendees in this endeavor, instructors will be offered several resources to include (but are not limited to):

  • Presentation from keynote and guest speakers
  • Instructional Designer (ID) and Course Designer (CD) collaboration 
  • Instructional coaching 
  • Individual and group training on instructional technology tools
  • Project management
  • Research & Development (R&D) on new tools or new uses of existing tools (including Canvas) 
  • Access to ODEL staff via the Summer Institute Teams chat

Stipends: 

Attendees have the opportunity to earn up to $2800 in stipends for successful completion of the Summer Institute. Stipends will be processed as the activities are completed and approved. 

Required: 

  • Attendance: (100% or otherwise prorated) and completed course with all content:  $2,000  

Optional but Highly Recommended: 

  • Student Perceptions Survey or other evaluation performed on the course resulting in a 2-page minimum report of the implemented course: $300 

  • Collaboration with ODEL on an OLC presentation: Registration and travel expenses covered 

  • Publish or present a research paper at a conference within one year of completing the Institute: $500 

What to Expect

The Summer Institute kicks off with a week-long series of keynote and guest speakers, group reflection, and instructional design consultations. This year, the institute will be offered virtually. 

Each participant will be provided an instructional designer to assist with the project for the remainder of the summer.  

Faculty participants will be asked to show their completed projects and provide testimonials of their experience in a Faculty Showcase at the conclusion of the Summer Institute. 

Participating faculty may be asked to serve as part of ODEL’s Faculty Mentor Corps to help their peers in the future!

Applicants Notified: May 21st  
Kick-Off: June 7-11th 
Consultation meetings: Weekly throughout the summer  
Faculty Showcase: August 6th  

Next Steps

Faculty will propose projects suited for the creation or redesign of a self-selected course. Proposals will be reviewed for how well they align with the goals and objectives of the summer institute theme. Projects should have the approval of the department chair as a course that will be taught in a distance modality within the next year.
