Course Overview:

The Texas Fish and Mussel Identification course is designed to assist government agency personnel, consultants, NGO staff, educators, students, or other interested parties in the accurate identification of Texas inland fishes and freshwater mussels. The four-day course will include two days of mussel identification instruction by Dr. Charles Randklev and colleagues from Texas A&M University, and two days of fish identification instruction by Dr. Timothy Bonner, Brad Littrell, and colleagues from Texas State University.  The course will include lecture and laboratory components. Additionally, we reserved some time for participants to bring specimens and work in the laboratory on identification.

Optional Field Experience Day

Field experience will provide participants with the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills to use during a field excursion. The Guadalupe River drainage is a biodiversity hotspot for mussels and fishes and will allow participants the opportunity to see several state-threatened species. Participants will be introduced to a variety of field sampling procedures for mussels and fishes and will be able to practice their identification skills under field conditions.
